Fairytales

Year 1

We will be exploring the real and magical worlds of fairy tales as inspiration for our work this

summer term.

Our stunning start will see us immersed into the world of Jack and the Beanstalk.  We will be printing using natural and man made objects and in literacy learning the story off by heart.

In Geography over the term we will be exploring map work and creating our own real and imaginary maps of places in the fairy tales. We will look at position and movement within maps and creating journey for our fairy tale characters. Using inspiration from the main characters of the fairy tales and stories from around the world we will place objects and the characters in the countries they are from whilst learning about the differences in places compared with our own local area.

In Art and Design we will take inspiration from famous print artists like Andy Warhol to practise our print making techniques creating season inspired prints

In Design and Technology, we will be designing a party fit for all the characters of our fairy tales we have learnt.  We will design and create invitations for the party.  We will also be making party food using skills such as basic chopping and mixing.

In Music we will be composing music to go alongside the stories.

In Science we will be looking at plants and growing our own plants.

In ICT we will continue with practising our basic skills on the computer and we will be coding with the ipads

In RE we will be exploring Big Questions about the world we live in and look at how people of faith may respond

The fantastic finish will see the children travel to Scarborough to carry out some geographical field work and exploring a real life castle.

Our topic for this term in Year 2 will be….

We are Explorers!

We will be learning about different countries around the world, our locations, cultures and traditions.

Our stunning start will see us locating Japan on a map, trying Japanese food and learning about some of our customs along with listening to traditional Japanese music. In art we will create Batik carps for a colourful area display

In Geography over the term we will be learning about human and physical geography and the similarities and differences of two places by comparing Japan and the UK, in particular the coastal town of Scarborough.  We will also learn about the daily and seasonal changing weather patterns in both countries.

In Art and Design we will take inspiration from famous artists from Japan, in particular the piece of work ‘Under the Wave’ by Hokusai.  We will explore this art work and practise our skills of colour mixing, painting techniques, drawing and watercolour before creating our own ‘Under the Wave’ inspired picture.

In Design and Technology, we will be looking at structures and creating a Japanese temple, exploring materials in detail and how to make things stronger.  Alongside the temple we will be making a lever for a dragon.

In Music we will be continuing to compose music and listen to and appraise music from around the world.

In Science we will be exploring materials and our different properties looking at how different materials are suitable for different purposes.  We will use our knowledge in Science to support our work in design and technology.

In ICT we continue with practising our basic skills on the computer and we will be coding with the ipads

In RE we will be exploring Big Questions about the world we live in and look at how people of faith may respond

The fantastic finish will see us travel to Scarborough to carry out some geographical field work;

exploring the area we have learnt all about, whilst also drawing the landscapes and taking photographs.
